The Run for Tendaba Village hopes to increase access to schools for children in Africa. School lunches cost $0.02/day per student, and yet this small cost is a limiting factor in sending children to school. The goal is to pay for one year of lunches.
BACKGROUND
In 2009, thanks to David White, I had the pleasure of visiting Tendaba Village with Dr. Buba Misawa of Washington and Jefferson College. Dr. Misawa highlighted for me the simplicity of giving back to a community - he donates countless hours to educate his students on the realities of the ground in The Gambia and post-colonial Western Africa. In a community such as Tendaba Village, a little bit of money and effort can go a long way. Parents are required to pay for school uniforms and school lunches for their children, but most are too poor to afford that.
THE REASON
School lunches cost roughly $0.02/day and yet THIS IS A LIMITING FACTOR FOR SCHOOL ENROLLMENT. The Run for Tendaba aims to raise enough money to pay for school lunches for a year for the entire village's school-aged children. Additionally, I hope that if enough funds are raised, we can supply a new set of uniforms for the children. The uniforms you see in the picture are the same uniforms donated in 2007 by students visiting from Washington and Jefferson college.
During my trip, I learned that the cost of doing nothing is too great. With a $20 to $100 donation, you could help buy 1000 or as much as 5000 school lunches - or enough money to pay for 3-15 children's school lunches for a year.
THE RUN
The fundraiser will include friends and family running in the 2009 New Haven Road Race in order to raise funds for the village. Participants will be running either the 5K or 20K, and will be directing their own friends and family to this page to centralize the donation efforts. Dr. Misawa has agreed to deliver the funds to Tendaba and therefore 100% of the funds will be going to children - 0% overhead (other than the small percentage held by this site ~5.6%).
