Most African schools operate with no books. Teachers must teach from memory and learn from other teachers who taught them from memory. Literacy, even for teachers, tops out at an 8th grade level without access to reading material.
The African Library Project establishes small libraries in sub-Saharan Africa by coordinating book drives in the USA. Each book drive is matched with a specific library project in Africa. The 1,000 gently used children's books collected and $500 in shipping fees, create a new library and provide first time access to books to young African minds. The all volunteer African Library Project harnesses the power of grassroots initiative in the USA and Africa. Partnering with US Peace Corps Lesotho, the Swaziland National Library Service, the Botswana Ministry of Education and others organizations dedicated to rural library development in Africa, ALP has established hundreds of small libraries, bringing together thousands of book donors.
$500 is not much to create a new library half way around the world. Please support your local book drive by donating to them on their individual giveforward page. Local book drives use the giveforward site to raise the $300/library that it costs to ship the books on the international portion of their long journey. Making a donation through this secure site assures that you will receive a tax exemption for your charitable contribution. You will receive a thank you email you can print for your tax records.
Thank you for helping to open a world of opportunity to hungry readers in Africa!
